Separate cyclists from pedestrians the way to go
As Councillor for The Gabba ward, I share the concerns about pedestrian and cyclists safety along Stanley Street, Woolloongabba.
It is one of the main routes into the city from the eastern suburbs so the number of cyclists will continue to increase.
As Chairperson previously responsible for cycling in Brisbane, I know Council officers had plans underway for a ‘Copenhagen’ style bike lane along Stanley Street. These lanes permit cyclists to travel in both directions in the one lane on the road but separated from vehicles.
Now Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has to finish this project. He has promised $100 million to improve cycling and this is a ‘black spot’ for cyclists
There will always be riders who ignore dismount signs. Separating the cyclists from the pedestrians and shop doorways is the best solution.
