The Lord Mayor plans 30 storeys in West End

30 April, 2008

Councillor Abrahams believes the residents of West End will oppose the Lord Mayor’s public announcement that he has plans for 30 storey buildings in West End.

The Lord Mayor boasts the Liberal candidate won the West End State School polling booth so he can impose buildings of thirty storeys or higher on West End residents.

Cr Abrahams rejects that the Council election gave the Lord Mayor a mandate for skyscrapers in West End.

‘The Lord Mayor was not seen in West End nor did he announce thirty storeys for West End during the campaign’ said Cr Abrahams

‘How can voters endorse secret plans’ said Cr Abrahams

The plans for high density were revealed in the Council debate on the Hale Street Toll Bridge cost blow outs from $180 million to $307 million.

‘The Lord Mayor is banking on thousands of new residents paying for the cost blow outs in toll charges and rate rises.’ Said Cr Abrahams

‘I am very concerned’ said Cr Abrahams
‘Firstly, this is a secret plan that should have been taken to the people before the election.

Secondly, there is not the parkland, public transport services, road space, sewer capacity nor schools or community facilities for this density in West End.

Finally, people from all over the city come to West End for its character, wonderful food and coffee shops in village setting. They are not looking for a shiny metal seat in a New York styled coffee shop underneath a tower building. They can get that anywhere. They are seeking a people friendly, relaxed, casual atmosphere surrounded by low rise buildings.

The Lord Mayor’s plans will be the death of West End as we know it.
