New Bridge Design Noisier

30 April, 2008

Council approved a new $370 million design for Hale Street Toll Bridge with greater impacts on South Brisbane residents.

The project modifications report revealed increases in noise levels from 2 to 11 dbA in South Brisbane and 4-5 dbA increases in Merivale Street.

However, the impacted sites were not given.

“It is a disgrace. The report did not identify the sites to get a tripling of noise levels” said Cr Abrahams.

“As Councillor for the suburb of West End, I was expected to vote on the new design without knowing the properties nor the noise level increases.

There was no information on the impacts on the communities of St Mary Church, St Andrews Church, Brisbane State High School nor residents along Merivale and Cordelia Streets.” said Cr Abrahams

“There was no time to get this info before the vote was taken.”
“The Lord mayor was not interested in the community knowing the facts.”

“The report said consultation was limited to ‘directly affected landowners in the immediate vicinity.’”

“This is not good enough. I call on Lord Mayor for a meeting of all residents and land owners in Merivale, Cordelia, Peel Streets and the relevant section of Boundary Street in the next two weeks” said Cr Abrahams

They need to know the increase in noise levels for their properties.
