Eleanor Schonell’s Year in Review

15 January, 2008

Millions of bus passengers and cyclists have travelled over the new Eleanor Schonell Bridge during its first year of operation, local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.

“I think the bridge shows the success of delivering dedicated sustainable transport infrastructure in Brisbane,” Cr Abrahams said.

More than two and a half million bus passengers crossed the bridge in the first year, she said.

“During 2007, an average of 210,000 people a month, or 52,000 passengers a week travelled to and from the University of Queensland via the bridge.

“The University of Queensland counted more than 235,000 cyclists riding across the bridge in 2007.

“Interestingly, 6,500 extra cyclists rode from the UQ campus to Dutton Park than in the other direction.

“The high use of the bridge shows that when public transport infrastructure provides frequent, direct and reliable services, they are overwhelmingly supported by the community.
