Ratepayers wishing to grow sustainable gardens and beautify their backyards are eligible to receive two free native plants this year, Local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.
“Residents who present their first rates notice of the year at the Dutton Park Ward Office – or at any Council Customer Service Centre or library – will then be eligible to collect their free trees at selected nurseries,” Cr Abrahams said.
“Residents can choose plants from over 30 different species, including flowering groundcovers, shrubs, feature trees and palms, to enhance their gardens and help the environment at the same time.
“Plants are crucial for improving Brisbane’s environment, as they clean the air by absorbing green house gas, carbon dioxide and giving out pure oxygen, contribute to rain production and provide food and shelter for our local wildlife.
“The native plants on offer are also appropriate for sustainable gardening, because once they’re established, they require little watering so residents can still grow fertile gardens despite tough water restrictions.”
Schools, community groups and charitable organisations can also receive up to 50 free plants, and clubs on Council leased land are eligible to receive 20 free plants each year.
Any local organisation requiring native trees for their Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony should contact Cr Abrahams at the Dutton Park Ward Office.
Once the first 2008 rates notice is presented at the Dutton Park Ward Office, residents can collect a stamped application card, which can be exchanged for two free plants from a selected range at the following nurseries:
Northern suburbs:
Carseldine Nursery, Carseldine
Nova Gardens, The Gap
Edible Landscapes Nursery, Northey Street City Farm, Windsor
The Green Shop, Clayfield
Southern suburbs:
Greenworld Garden Centre, Sunnybank Hills
Western suburbs:
Hampton Gardens, Kenmore
Just Gardens, Jindalee
Eastern suburbs:
Hawkins Garden Centre, Chandler
Cottage Garden Nursery, East Brisbane
If residents have already disposed of their rates notice, they can phone Council’s Contact Centre on 3403 8888 and ask to speak to someone from Council’s rates unit for a reprinted notice.
