Ninety community groups are set to share almost $1.6 million in the first round of Council’s 2007-08 Community Grants Program.
Three local community projects approved for funding are in addition to four local groups that received almost $69,800 for environmental initiatives through the Sustainability Grants that were offered for the first time.
“The grants provide crucial assistance to local non-profit organisations seeking to hold events,” local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.
Three Arts, Cultural and Festival grants were awarded to diverse groups for events such as:
- the production of a local Hip Hop event (Diaspora); a Small World Festival for children’s art by Hands on Art Inc;
a costume and training project for a Sierre Leone dance group.
Under the Sustainability Grants, groups received funding for initiatives such as rainwater tanks and the installation of insulation.
The Community Initiative Resource Association (CIRA) received funding to install solar power panels, ceiling fans, a rainwater tank and a new roof and gutting.
“IF there are community organisations that missed out this round or have never applied for a grant, I encourage them to contact me as soon as possible to submit an application for the next round of funding, which closes 25 February.”
Council has seven categories within the Community Grants Program:
Sport and Recreation,
Sport and General,
Community Development projects,
History and Heritage,
Arts, Cultural and Festivals,
Building organisational capacity of community organisations, and
Sustainability Grants.
Workshops will be held in late January to give future applicants tips for their submissions.
