Local Councillor (Dutton Park) Helen Abrahams wants to hear your views on the West End Riverside Parks Masterplan.
“I will be holding a public meeting at the corner of Victoria Street and Riverside Drive on Sunday August 19 at 4pm,” she said.
“The West End Riverside Parks Masterplan recommends closing Riverside Drive to traffic and preventing the park from being used as a free car park.
The closure of the 3.5km Drive from Orleigh Park to Kurilpa Park near the Gallery of Modern Art would occur progressively over time.
“Closing Riverside Drive has strong support from the local community, as does the provision of more park facilities, shade and pathways for walkers only.
“Several sections of the drive have been identified that could be safely closed in the short term.
“Some sections where industry still exists would not provide enough casual surveillance at night – but sections where there is enough casual surveillance of the parkland would be opened up sooner.
“The local community also wants the open, shady ambience of Orleigh Park extended along Riverside Drive.”
Other key points of the plan to address the need for parkland include:
- establishing a dedicated bikeway
- creating a separate pedestrian path along the river edge and
- developing finger parks linking the riverside park to side streets
