The Message is Clear - More Bikeway Signs

04 November, 2007

A survey of cyclists and pedestrians using the Kedron Brook Bikeway on Brisbane's northside says the new signs on the bikeway are a resounding success.

6.8 kilometres of bikeway between Teralba Park and Crushers Leagues Club had directional and distance signage installed in March 2007.

A survey of 145 people was carried out recently and showed:

   - 95% of users said the directional signs were a good idea
   - 77% answered that the signs had a positive impact on personal safety
   - 79% said it was beneficial to getting around the local area
   - 92% would like to see more signs on Brisbane's bikeways.

"Clearly the new signs are fulfilling a community need that is not currently met on other Council bikepaths," Environment & Sustainability Chair Helen Abrahams said.

The installation of a variety of signs was a key recommendation of the Personal Safety Review of Pathways, which followed attacks on women using the Kedron Brook Bikeway.

The signs include "You are Here" maps, directional signs pointing to community facilities and streets, street exit markers, signs on road bridges and distance markers.

"The signs on the road underpasses and the street exit markers got the strongest support from paths users," Councillor Abrahams said.

"But the distance markers got the weakest amount of support.

"The path users have sent us a clear message – Council needs to roll out directional signs on all bikepaths in the Brisbane bikeway network to improve safety and amenity," Cr Abrahams said.
