Faster, more reliable bus services to the Dutton Park area will be rolled out from Monday as part of a State Government funding boost of $3.7m for new services across Brisbane.
Local Councillor Helen Abrahams said she was delighted that the State responded to calls for improved frequency and reliability of services for locals given the bulging patronage currently experienced.
“Since the opening of the Eleanor Schonell bridge the number of people taking a bus in the area has trebled,” Cr Abrahams said.
“During the first week 3800 passengers travelled across the bridge on a bus each day – that has now soared to more than 12000 people.
“This funding boost will mean two extra weekday trips from the city to UQ at 7.28am and 8.23am – and they can’t come soon enough.
“Peak hour passengers travelling from UQ Lakes to the city in the afternoon will see extra weekday trips at 4.05pm, 4.35pm and 5.05pm.
Local State Member for South Brisbane Anna Bligh said she is pleased with the local boost in buses.
"These additional peak hour services are great news for locals traveling to and from the City and the University of Queensland,” Ms Bligh said.
“They are a result of strong state government investment and a concerted campaign by Cr Abrahams to provide improved public transport services for the local area,” she said.
“The provision of dedicated sustainable transport infrastructure, such as the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, is an important part of building a world class public transport system,” Cr Abrahams said.
“A boost for public transport through my ward is also a boost for the environment.
“Every bus on the road takes at least 40 cars off the road –this is good news for a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases we emit through our transport,” Cr Abrahams said.
The new services start on Monday 23rd July.
