Home for Rwandan Drums

07 June, 2007

Local residents and the Dutton Park Ward Livability Committee have helped find a home for Rwandan drums in Yeronga, local Councillor (Dutton Park) Helen Abrahams said.

“As a result of the support and assistance of the local community  - the Rwandan Association of Queensland has successfully imported the drums from their homeland.

“The Yeronga AFL Club will provide a new home for the Rwandan drums – a place where the musicians can practice without disturbing local residents.

“The Dutton Park Liveability Committee funded the importation of the drums from Rwanda.

“However, the cost was more than expected to release the drums from customs – so local resident Mark Stockwell from Stockwell’s Development stepped in to help.

“Then the problems started,” Cr Abrahams said.

“I am told the drums are symbolic of the power of the clam and therefore must be stored together.

“So at very short notice, the community needed to find a place to store all of the drums in one place.

“Mr John Corless from the Yeronga AFL Club had no hesitation in providing a home for the drums when I asked for his help.

“The drums are now together in a safe place.

“This is a great outcome – this is a delightful story of the whole community playing a part in welcoming new refugees,” she said.
