Brisbane City Council’s Green Choice Gardening Vans will spread the word about sustainable gardening to the East Brisbane and Holland Park wards on Sunday 29 October.
The first 500 residents from the following suburbs - who exchange a voucher from their local Quest newspaper this week - will receive four free native plants.
· East Brisbane - Greenslopes, Kangaroo Point, Buranda, East Brisbane, Stones Corner and parts of Annerley, Coorparoo, Holland Park, Woolloongabba and Camp Hill.
· Holland Park - Mount Gravatt, Holland Park West, parts of Tarragindi, Holland Park, Mansfield, Wishart, Upper Mt Gravatt, Coorparoo and most of Mt Gravatt East
Environment and Sustainability Committee chairperson Councillor Helen Abrahams said greening backyards with native plants was an important part of Council’s vision for the city’s clean and green future.
“Developing a sustainable garden uses fewer resources and adds to Brisbane’s subtropical character,” Cr Abrahams said.
“Planting species suited to local conditions will protect our natural diversity, create valuable habitat for native wildlife and won’t escape and become bushland weeds.
“Whether you are designing a new garden or simply maintaining an existing one, you can help green Brisbane naturally by making your garden more sustainable.
“Sustainable gardening uses natural resources like water more efficiently, recycles waste, controls weeds, protects biodiversity and is low-maintenance.
“Right now is a great time to make the change to water efficient gardening. Watering by hand using a bucket or watering can is the best way to establish new plants and meet the current water restrictions,” Cr Abrahams said.
Green Choice Gardening Vans will be at the following locations:
· Sunday 29 October: 9am - 11am. Wembley Park, Temple Street, Coorparoo (UBD24:E18)
· Sunday 29 October 2pm - 4pm. Mott Park, Logan Road, Holland Park (UBD180:L12)
Copies of Council’s Green Choice Gardening in Brisbane guide and Level 3 Water Restrictions Green Choice Gardening Fact Sheet will be available at the events.
Plant packs are available in two themes, Cottage Garden and Water-sense. Only residents of the above suburbs, who receive the voucher in their Quest newspaper will be eligible for the free native plant packs.
