Rainwater Tank Success

06 March, 2007

Environment and Sustainability Chair Helen Abrahams congratulates the more than 27,000 Brisbane residents who have put in a rainwater tank and received a rebate since 2002.

“I am delighted that Brisbane residents are continuing to be Water Smart and embracing Council’s water saving programs,” Cr Abrahams said.

“I have been advised that Brisbane’s rainwater tank scheme is the most successful across the nation.”

Council has issued more than $17.6 million in rainwater tank rebates since the scheme was introduced by the previous Labor administration.

This financial year alone, more than almost 14,500 rebates have been issued at a cost of $9.7 million.  This financial year’s allocated budget for the scheme is $11.5 million.

"Drought restrictions on water use and improving tank designs are making rainwater tanks even more appealing.

"It’s great to see that the people of Brisbane are implementing water saving and re-use techniques around their home to ensure a clean and green city for future generations,” Cr Abrahams said.

Some key benefits of rainwater tanks include:
· Reduced demand on the city’s piped water system and volume extracted from our rivers
· Reduced stormwater run-off that can cause local erosion and flooding
· improved water quality in local creeks and waterways
· savings on water bills

Last financial year, minimum tanks sizes for the $750 rebate were increased from 3000L to 5000L and minimum tank sizes for the $500 rebate were increased from 1000L to 3000L.
