Environment and Sustainability Chair Councillor Helen Abrahams has expressed her disappointment with the Lord Mayor’s new Transport Plan.
“I was particularly interested in his proposals for cycling and pedestrian facilities and networks in our city,” she said.
“After three years, I was disappointed there were no new recommendations for cycling. The report contains exactly the same words as the 2002-2016 Transport Plan for Clean and Green Transport.
“However, during the three years between the two plans, there has been a significant increase in the number of people cycling to work.
“A recent survey on cycling and pedestrian trends has shown an increase of 13% in commuter cycling.
“At a time when community awareness of the role transport plays in climate change, I believe there should be new initiatives to encourage more people to enjoy cycling to work.
“We know that petrol prices have risen significantly and are likely to continue to rise.
“Cycling to work is on option for many people, but they do need a safe cycle route and end of trip facilities.
“The Goodwill Bridge and the proposed Tank Street Bridge are State Government projects, and the Eleanor Schonell Bridge was a project of the previous administration,” she said.
