Civic Cabinet yesterday endorsed recommendations by Environment Chair and Dutton Park Ward Councillor Helen Abrahams to include about 2 000sqm of new parkland and earmark land for future affordable housing in a draft plan for urban renewal in South Brisbane’s industrial area.
“As a result of my intervention an additional 3 000sqm has been flagged for investigation for future parkland or alternatively as commercial use,” Cr Abrahams said.
“I believe the local community will demand the site in question be given over as parkland.
“As residential and commercial development continues, we need to make sure we keep pace by building new parks.
“No-one can underestimate the consequences of the shortage of affordable housing – so this is a tick for our community.”
Councillor Abrahams praised her Civic Cabinet colleagues for heeding her call for more parkland, saying it was a win for the community.
“I am pleased that we agreed on a solution that will help with the two most significant issues – a shortage of green space and affordable housing” Cr Abrahams said.
“Brisbane is booming, and this is especially the case in the inner city, but to maintain a diverse and inclusive community we must find more affordable housing locations. Everyone in our community needs a roof over their heads.”
Once the draft plan for South Brisbane’s industrial area is finalised, Cr Abrahams said it would go out for community consultation.
