Shining Results of Climate Change Report Card

19 December, 2006

Local Councils continue to lead the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to the latest climate change action report card.

Brisbane City Council is one of the 166 Councils that collectively reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by almost 2.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) in 2005/06, Environment and Sustainability Chair Helen Abrahams said.

“This reduction is equivalent to taking 674,000 cars off the road for one year,” she said.

“The 2.9 million tonnes is a increase in reduction of 43% over 2004/05.”

Brisbane alone reduced its emissions by more than 280,000 CO2e – which is equivalent to the emissions created by 65,182 cars in one year.

“Most of Brisbane City Council’s corporate reductions came from our Rochedale Landfill gas recovery program,” Cr Abrahams said.

“The most effective reduction commitment our community has made is through being part of the Green waste collection services,” she said.

Brisbane City Council has been a member of the Cities for Climate Change Protection program since 1998.

“Labor Councillors reaffirmed their commitment to showing leadership on this issue when they passed a motion last week in Council committing to the principles of Kyoto and calling on the Federal Government to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

“Tackling Climate Change does not mean losing our quality of life – it does mean adopting environmentally friendly ways of doing what we are doing now.

“We can all make changes, for example, buying a solar water heater replacement rather than an electric one,” she said.
