Brisbane City Council has appointed a Climate Change and Energy Taskforce to ensure that Brisbane is equipped to deal with global environmental and energy issues.
Environment & Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Helen Abrahams said recent events such as the Earth Dialogues Summit and the Queensland Government’s Climate Change Summit had highlighted the international, statewide and local impacts of these phenomena.
“The appointment of this taskforce will ensure that Council consistently and responsibly investigates and responds to issues,” Cr Abrahams said.
“The taskforce will be looking at climate change, increased energy consumption, affordability and availability of petroleum fuels and how these issues will affect communities at a local level.
“Residents will also be able to make submissions to the taskforce for consideration, and the taskforce will report to Council on its findings.”
The taskforce members are John McEvoy, Dr Patrice Derrington, Jim McKnoulty, and Professor Ian Lowe (Chair).
By March 2007, the Climate Change and Energy Taskforce will prepare a detailed action plan of long and short-term activities for Council to undertake in cooperation with the private sector, the community and other levels of government.
