Volunteers involved in Brisbane City Council’s community bushcare program have helped to rehabilitate the equivalent of 96 football fields or 108 hectares of land, Environment and Sustainability Chair Councillor Helen Abrahams said.
“I would like to personally thank and acknowledge the efforts and dedication of volunteers and staff in achieving the outstanding on-the-ground environmental outcomes,” Cr Abrahams said.
Approximately 2500 volunteers from 126 community groups throughout the city are involved in “Habitat Brisbane”, which aims to restore and protect bushland, wetland and waterway habitats.
“Volunteers contributed over 37,000 hours last financial year – this is more than $560,000 worth of labour,” Cr Abrahams said.
“The contribution from the community has been outstanding. Almost half of the more than 85,000 native plants the program established were supplied at no cost.
“About 679 truckloads (6786m3) of weeds were removed and more than 38 kilometres of waterways were planted for erosion control and rehabilitation.
“These are outstanding achievements.
“Joining a Habitat Brisbane group is a great way for residents to make a real difference to the local environment.
“If members of the community would like to become involved, they can contact their local Councillor or the Council’s Contact centre on 3403 8888.”
