Its time for Jagera Hall to become an Aboriginal meeting place

21 May, 2012

Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward, says there is growing support for Brisbane’s Aboriginal elders to be given the lease to Jagera Hall, Musgrave Park.

“Yesterday at Paniyiri, members of the Greek community have told me they think it is a good idea. They know the aboriginal community has been calling for improved access to the building for some time” said Helen Abrahams.

“The current process is that anyone wishing to use the Hall has to make an online booking five days before they wish to use the Hall. This process excludes meetings that might be arranged at short notice” said Helen Abrahams.

“It is urgent that Lord Mayor Graham Quirk gives an in principle commitment to make this Hall available to the Aboriginal community” said Helen Abrahams.

“A number of significant events for the Aboriginal Community are held in the next few weeks including Sorry Day on 26 May and NADIOC Family Day soon after.

“Now is the time to give a commitment to the elders” said Helen

“I am sure that most Brisbane residents would think that the Aboriginal Community already have a lease on the Hall as it is a place for aboriginal celebrations and events.
