Councillor Helen Abrahams is delighted to announce that works have commenced on the closure of Riverside Drive and the road will be closed on 20th February between Forbes Street and Kurilpa Street, West End.
“The residents of West End have been calling for the road to be closed since that time. They wish this wonderful parkland along the River to become a park once again.”
“Currently the road is being used as a commuter car park. The road was even widened without any notice to accommodate more cars.”
“The commuter parking has increased since the parking meters were installed through out the area. Understandably the local residents wish to have a park not a car park. Also, the residents of the new apartments were promised a riverside park when they purchased their units.
“I was not prepared to let the Lord Mayor’s broken promise go without action” said Helen Abrahams
“In the past, I requested a short section of the road be closed and it was successful in stopping a major problem with hooning along Riverside Drive.
Local Councillors have access to a limited source of funds for park improvements. These funds have been used to extend the road closure using bollards and park gates“ said Cr Abrahams
“I hope that when the major park improvements are undertaken the closure will be of a higher design standard with full kerb and channel”
“My focus has been delivering a promise to local residents but I will continue to lobby for the park improvements.” said Helen Abrahams
“The lack of parking will be a concern for workers in the local businesses but this area is well served by Council’s premier CityGlider bus service so I would encourage them to use it to travel into the area or car pool. Those workers who are able might try riding to work as West End is well served by off road bikeways along the River.
