Buranda State School was a joint winner of The School of the Year Award and this was well deserved as consistently over 80% of pupils have walked ridden or caught the bus to school. They shared the award with St Kierans School, Brighton.
Twenty one schools throughout Brisbane participated in Council’s very successful Active Travel School program this year so this win is a major achievement.
“The school was severely impacted by the construction of the Eastern Busway during the year making this achievement more commendable” said Cr Abrahams.
Buranda State School had 48% of students using active travel modes to travel to school before the program was introduced at the beginning of the year. By June more than 80% of students were on board using active travel. The peak was in August with 88% of students at the school actively travelling.
“One prep class regularly gets 94% of children actively travelling to school so age of the pupils is no barrier” Helen Abrahams said
Buranda State School won the Golden Boot award in September with 30% of children riding a bike or a scooter to school that month.
“It is great to see the local bikeways being put to such good use” said Helen Abrahams
The Active Travel School program delivered a 35% decrease in vehicles around all schools in Brisbane. The reduction of the congestion improves the traffic safety for everyone around the school.
East Brisbane State School will be an Active Travel School in 2012.
“This will be a challenge because of the main road surrounding the school. Mrs Carmel Newman who has been the strength behind Buranda SS success has offered to assist the staff and parents of East Brisbane” said Helen Abrahams.
