The report of Pre-feasibility Study of Brisbane Backflow Prevention Measures Investigations, tabled at the Council meeting last night recommends the next stage of investigations are extended to include stormwater network associated with two streets in West End and East Brisbane.
Kurilpa Street and Hill End Terrace West End and Hilton Street and Stanley Street, East Brisbane stormwater network have been identified as “potentially backflow inundated” areas.
Mr Max Winders, the author of this report recommends that these areas are included in next two stages of the Study of Brisbane Backflow Prevention Measures Investigation.
“This is great news and is supported by the 1974 flood inundation maps attached below” said Cr Abrahams
“The stories of West End residents who attended the community information sessions gave a clear message of inundation from backflow in stormwater drains.”
Their stories have been heeded in the First Stage of the investigation.
“I know that the residents of East Brisbane will be delighted by this news” said Helen Abrahams.
However, these residents will need to wait for the release of the Stage 2 and Stage 3.
“It is disappointing that there is no time frame for when the installation of back flow prevention measures will be introduced” said Helen Abrahams
Lord Mayor Quirk said that if there are early indications there will be benefit then work will commence immediately. However when asked for a timeframe he would not commit to a timeframe.
“With the summer storm season is approaching this is not good enough.”
