Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward announces Black Spot funding for the upgrade to the safety for cyclists on the designated bikeway between Laidlaw Parade, East Brisbane and Hamilton Street, Kangaroo Point.
“The improvement at the entrance of the contra-flow lane in Thorn Lane is particularly welcome” said Helen Abrahams.
“From the first day this project was open the design of the bikeway at the intersection of Castlebar Street and Thorn Lane was problematic” said Helen Abrahams.
“When a cyclist misjudges the curve, he or she is bowled over by a concrete edge along the bikeway and can fall into the direct path of cars as well as losing a lot of skin. My call for this redesign has gone unheeded until now” said Helen Abrahams.
“I know the residents of Castlebar Street will be pleased with the proposed changes to the Castlebar and Lambert Streets intersection. It will reduce the speed of cyclists and better direct the pathway of cyclists so improving safety particularly for drivers emerging from Castlebar Street.”
“The project includes the upgrade at several intersections to improve the sight lines and line of the pathways for cyclists” said Helen Abrahams.
The bike path on the footpath at the intersection of Lytton Road and Laidlaw Parade will be truncated and the bike paths delineated by a central line.
“I am aware of a number of near misses from head on collisions at this intersection so I welcome this improvement” said Helen Abrahams.
“These improvements are much needed. However, I call on commuting cyclists to slow down as the topography of many of the intersections is still less than desirable for high speed cycling.”
