Bus Bridge a Success

21 February, 2007

More than 1,600 people a day have used the new state government funded 109 bus service in the last week, Dutton Park Councillor Helen Abrahams said.

“I am delighted and pleasantly surprised by these patronage numbers,” Councillor Abrahams said.

“The university semester has not yet began and so these numbers show that this cross river link is serving a real need,” she said.

Council monitored the patronage on alternative services at the same time, to check whether people had simply switched to a different bus service.

The latest figures show that 1,000 new passengers are travelling to the uni via buses.

This equates to approximately 800 fewer cars on the roads, based on average occupancy of cars during peak hours.

“I am sure that once the university semester starts this high frequency bus service will continue to used by even more people.

“Local people have voted with their feet with huge patronage – I congratulate the state government for their strong investment in these bus services”  Cr Abrahams said.
