Win celebrated by local residents

09 August, 2010

Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward, celebrates the State Government’s rejection of 12 storey buildings in West End. These heights were proposed against the wishes of local residents in the Riverside South Precinct of the Lord Mayor’s South Brisbane Riverside Neighbourhood Plan.

“I congratulate Premier Anna Bligh and Minister Sterling Hinchliffe on this decision” said Cr Abrahams.

“This decision is a good planning decision. It is a triumph for common sense and it demonstrates that Premier Bligh was listening to her community” said Helen Abrahams.

“The higher density was rejected on the grounds of insufficient social infrastructure in the area.  This is a precedent.” said Cr Abrahams.

“In the past, little consideration was given to social infrastructure. This decision is a message for the development industry and local government. Urban renewal areas must represent appropriate density for the appropriate area with appropriate infrastructure” said Cr Abrahams.

“My study found 112 Government funded and Non-government funded services within the West End peninsula. 60% of these services were considered under threat of closing down or relocating due to the gentrification of the area” said Helen Abrahams.

“Some of the services were state wide but many local services for local people were considered under threat.”

“I believe this decision means future Neighourhood Plans must incorporate measures to protect local community services and organisations.’

It is the second win for local residents. The first was the removal of proposed height limits of 5 and 8 storeys in the much loved Boundary Street shopping precinct. This second decision maintains status quo for the building heights along the River south of Davies Park.

“Now, Vulture Street is the boundary of the redevelopment in the West End peninsula” said Cr Abrahams.
