Get set – Clean Up Australia Day just around the corner

14 February, 2007

About 150 tonnes of rubbish is expected to be collected in Brisbane during this year’s Clean Up Australia Day, local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.

Cr Abrahams encouraged local residents to get on board to help reach the target.

“More than 200 tonnes of rubbish was collected in Brisbane last year.

“This year’s target is a bit smaller, due to the extensive work carried out over the last 12 months to clean up illegal dumping sites around the city.

“Nationally, 750,000 people participated in Clean Up Australia Day last year and they collected 9,000 tonnes of rubbish – this is more than 400 semi-trailer loads of waste!” she said.

With Clean Up Australia Day still two and half weeks away on March 4, Cr Abrahams said more than 150 schools and businesses would be participating in their own clean up days as well.

“The Business Clean Up Day (BCUD) falls on Tuesday 27 February and Schools Clean Up Day (SCUD) is Friday 2 March.  By taking a stand in large numbers, we all can bring about changes that ensure a healthy environment for now and for future generations,” Cr Abrahams said.

“Climate Change is a global issue that affects us locally – we need to make a concerted effort to ensure the protection and sustainability of our local environment.”
