Councillor Helen Abrahams says the Lord Mayor’s decision to buy the Milton Tennis Site for parkland sets a precedent for acquisition of other inner City parkland.
“I support the acquisition of inner city parks” said Cr Abrahams.
“I support the acquisition of inner city parks where there is a demonstrable need for the new park.”
“I am not aware of any strategic need for this parkland in Milton” said Councillor Abrahams.
“It is not part of the Milton Station Neighbourhood Plan. The park is not located where higher density is proposed.”
“In contrast, the Lord Mayor did not act on the opportunity to purchase land beside Davies Park in spite of him promising a park on this site” said Cr Abrahams.
“He did not buy parkland in an area where a population increase to 33,000 is proposed by a Neighbourhood Plan as he thought it was too expensive. Yet he found the $30-$40M to purchase the old Tennis Courts.”
“If it is good enough for Milton it should be good enough for West End” said Cr Abrahams.
The Lord Mayor used the fact the old Milton Tennis site floods to justify the purchase of this site after years of work by Mr Kevin Seymour to get Council approval for a residential development on this site.
“There is a similar need for acquisition of parkland in Buranda where development is proposed along Norman Creek” said Cr Abrahams.
“The acquisition of the Milton site for park is the precedent” said Cr Abrahams.
