Community outrage at removal of park trees

02 July, 2010

Local residents are meeting onsite tomorrow, Friday 2 July at 9.30am to tell Council what they think about the removal of 16 park trees in Riverside Park, West End.

Residents will tell Council that replacement trees must be planted immediately.

Residents have a clear message that West End Riverside Park must retain its trees and canopies to provide shade from the western sun.  The residents wish to see mature fig trees planted as replacement trees.

“Fig trees are the dominant theme for trees in this park,” said Cr Helen Abrahams.

The trees have been removed without Council advising local residents or the local Councillor contrary to Council’s notification process.

“The park trees go down as the new apartment building behind goes up” said Cr Abrahams.

“My repeated call for the file on the landscape plan for the West End Riverside Park has been answered by the pre-emptorary removal of the trees in the park” said Cr Abrahams.

“Last week Council removed a character house, today they are removing park trees. In neither instance has there been any consultation with anyone,” said Cr Abrahams.

The Lord Mayor is arrogantly ignoring residents.
