Council has received a development application to remove the two character houses at 5 and 9 Orleigh Street, West End, but as it is a Code Notifiable application, local residents will have not be able to appeal Council’s decision.
“The application is likely to be approved without residents knowing what is happening” said Cr Helen Abrahams.
“This new application is a direct result of Council purchasing and then demolishing the tin and timber house at 1 Orleigh Street to provide the required area to construct a CityGlider roundabout,” said Cr Abrahams.
Several years ago when these three houses were put on the market at the same time, residents approached me with their concerns about the loss of these fine examples of character houses. Luckily, these houses were purchased as their location alongside Orleigh Park on the river was a highly desirable residential address.
The new CityGlider terminus converted this tranquil parkside area into a non-stop weekend bus stop with buses idling, stopping and accelerating at all hours of the night.
“Council’s removal of the house on the corner was the final straw” said Cr Abrahams.
“When Council removed the house on their property is was the death knoll for the other two houses”
“As the development application for the demolition states ‘the demolition of the adjoining dwelling at 1 Orleigh Street resulted in the demise of a cluster of 3 pre-war dwellings”.
“It is a sad day for Hill End. Brisbane is on the way to becoming just another city of concrete and towers” said Cr Abrahams.
“I believe it reflects the Lord Mayor’s new world city that has no respect for the character of Brisbane and Brisbane’s unique architecture.
Council provided local residents plans of the roundabout showing that the house on 1 Orliegh Street could remain with the roundabout taking a corner of the property.
“Instead they woke to find a construction sign on the property boundary and the house was gone three days later” said Helen Abrahams
