Traffic Lights announcement as win for local community

25 May, 2010

Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward, announced $500 000 funding in Council’s 2010-11 for traffic lights in Montague Road to provide safe pedestrian crossing for students of West End State School and the West End Market customers.

“I have lobbied for these traffic lights for the last two years” said Cr Abrahams

“My lobbying has included working with the parents of students at West End State School, petitions and media coverage of the need for the traffic lights” said Cr Abrahams

Today, Mrs Linda Hogendoorn, a local parent, gave an impassioned speech in the Council Chamber on behalf of parents of the school for the traffic lights.

“Her speech was the final measure to deliver funding of the lights’ said Helen Abrahams

“The ground swell of community concern and demand for the traffic lights was rewarded today.”

“The funding of the traffic lights is a win for ‘people power.”

“School children have to wait in a line of 50-100 waiting for the rare gap in the traffic just so they can start their sport day activity.”

“Regularly the police are asked to undertake traffic control on Montague Road to ensure the students can cross Montague Road safely”

“Clearly, there is a desperate need for traffic lights in Montague Road so I am delighted to announce the 2010-11 budget funding’ said Cr Abrahams
