Landscaping of demolition site

The Councillor for The Gabba Ward, Helen Abrahams and local residents call for enforcement of the Brisbane City Plan requirement for landscape improvements to be carried out on the demolition site at 133 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane.

The Brisbane City Plan requires a development site to be turfed, landscaped and open for use by the public until redevelopment commences where the re development is delayed more than three months.

In 2004, three shops and half dozen affordable housing units along Melbourne Street were demolished. The site has remained bare earth and an eyesore since that time.

“People’s homes were pulled down for redevelopment yet the site has remained vacant all this time. The units were low cost housing and so met a desperate need in the local area’ said Helen Abrahams.

“The Brisbane City Plan requirement applies to the CBD and CBD fringe areas to prevent demolition sites remaining as wasteland for years at a time”

“I believe the City Plan requirements should be applied to this site” said Helen Abrahams.

 “The condition of this site detracts from the millions Council spent on streetscape improvements in Melbourne Street’.

‘I am very concerned that the Lord Mayor’s plans for skyscrapers in South Brisbane, will mean more of these desolate spaces while the developers buy up enough sites to meet the lot size criteria for high rise buildings” said Helen Abrahams.

“The improvements should be undertaken immediately as four years is just too long” said Helen Abrahams

“Most people will remember that the Brisbane Square was a park for many years before Suncorp commenced construction” said Helen Abrahams.

"where buildings are demolished and, for whatever reason, redevelopment is delayed for more than 3 months, the following works are carried out:
• site is cleared of all rubble, debris and demolition materials
• site is levelled to the same level as the adjoining footpath and turfed so it can be mowed
• site is landscaped with perimeter planting consisting of advanced specimens of fast growing species in accordance with the Planting Species Planning Scheme Policy
• drainage is provided to prevent ponding
• site is maintained so there no sediment run-off onto adjacent premises, roads or footpaths
• site is maintained to ensure no nuisance to adjacent premises, roads or footpaths
• public access is provided where public safety can be maintained"
