Residents will fight to keep tin and timber dwellings in Kangaroo Point

14 March, 2010

Residents of Kangaroo Point who attended a meeting at the Pineapple Hotel had a clear message for Council being their tin and timber houses should be protected from high rise development.

The 60 or more residents live in the streets between Wellington Road, Shafston Avenue, River terrace and Vulture Street came out in force to the meeting.

“There were twice as many as I expected at the meeting” said Councillor Helen Abrahams

“They came because they are concerned that homes within the Demolition Control Precinct will be lost to high rise development.”

“A simple change of the area classification and the protection for the houses is lost” Helen said

“Many streets within the Plan area have some of the most intact character housing streetscapes in all of The Gabba Ward” said Helen Abrahams

Other Neighbourhood Plans have approved building heights of 8 to 30 storeys.

“ There was a clear message from the meeting that buildings of these heights would not be acceptable in the streets between River Terrace and Wellington Road.”

Residents agreed to meet when the draft Plan is released so that they can collectively respond if their homes are threatened.
