Win for local residents

26 March, 2010

The residents of Kangaroo Point have had a victory over Brisbane City Council regarding the Neighbourhood Plan for Kangaroo Point.

Council named the new Plan the Woolloongabba North Neighbourhood Plan without any consultation with residents or the local Councillor.

Local residents objected to this name. They used every opportunity to object including Councillor Abrahams’s meetings in the park, the Community Planning Team meetings and in written submissions.

Council has agreed to the residents’ wishes and the Plan is now called the Kangaroo Point South Neighbourhood Plan.

“This is an important win for the residents” said Councillor Abrahams.

“The Woolloongabba Centre Neighbourhood Plan allows 20 storey skyscrapers in appropriate areas. However, most of the area within the Kangaroo Point South Neighbourhood Plan is not suitable for skyscrapers as it is home to ‘tin and timber’ dwellings that are protected by Character Demolition Precinct controls’ said Helen Abrahams.

“It was important to delineate through the Plan name that these are two very different areas of the City” said Cr Abrahams.

“The residents were concerned that approval for skyscrapers would spread like a cancer into their streets” said Helen Abrahams

“While I  acknowledge the inner city population will grow it must be based on an appropriate density in appropriate area approach’ said Helen Abrahams.

“It is not a “one building height fits all” Neighbourhood Plan” said Cr Abrahams.
