COUNCIL CONNECTING WITH HOMELESS

14 April, 2010

Councillor for The Gabba Ward is calling on local residents to dig deep and donate for Brisbane City Council’s Homeless Connect event on Tuesday, 11 May 2010 at RNA Showgrounds.

Councillor Helen Abrahams said residents could make donations at the The Gabba Ward Office until 30 April.

“We are calling on all local residents and businesses to show their generosity and donate some needed items to the Homeless Connect event,” Councillor Abrahams said.

“The most essential items are men’s clothing and toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste. We are also asking for donations of towels, canned goods, blankets, and shoes.

“This event is a great way for the community to help those less fortunate.

“This Homeless Connect event will be first time the event has been held outside City Hall. Because City Hall is currently closed for repair, the event will be held in the Commerce Building at the RNA Showgrounds from 9 – 2pm.

“Council is providing free transport to and from the event. Pick-ups begin at 7.30am and run all day from New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, Footprints, 139 Club, Pindari Hostel and Roma House on the Northside and West End Community House, Brisbane Homelessness Centre, OzCare and Bowman Johnson Hostel on the Southside,” she said.

Councillor Abrahams said the event will provide free access to a wide range of essential practical services such as medical care, dentistry, optometry, counselling, accommodation advice, employment advice, legal assistance, ID assistance, and personal care services like haircuts, showers, food and clothing.

“Since the Homeless Connect program was introduced almost three years ago, over 4,200 disadvantaged and under privileged people have accessed services that would otherwise be out of reach,” Councillor Abrahams said

“At Homeless Connect people can connect to services and enjoy a meal, music, activities and giveaways,” she said.
