Roundabout House for Community Centre

12 March, 2010

The Councillor for the Gabba Ward, Helen Abrahams, calls for a community centre to be established in the character house on the site purchased by Council for the CityGlider roundabout terminus.

The plans for the roundabout in Orleigh Street show that only a small part of the land purchased is necessary for the roundabout.

“The house could easily remain on site although it may need to be shifted back on the block” said Cr Abrahams

“Acting, on a suggestion from a local resident, I invited comment from the community on the desirability for a Community Centre’ said Councillor Abrahams.

“There is strong support for this building to be converted into a community meeting space. “

“The suggestions for the building include;
• a meeting space for young mothers
• a  “enterprise hub, project initiation hub, or space similar to Visible Ink in the Valley (but for adults 25yrs+).”
• A green initiatives centre and
• Low cost housing.

“Most of the activities could all be housed in a Community Centre such as this” said Helen Abrahams.

“The proposed redevelopment of much of the West End Peninsula must be supported by community facilities and community spaces to make sure West End remains a livable suburb” said Helen

“The house provides a unique opportunity to provide for the social infrastructure prior to the massive increase in population numbers.”
