Work has commenced on the contra flow bike lane in Thorn Lane, Kangaroo Point as a direct result of intervention by Cr Abrahams and the demands of local cyclists.
The contra flow bike lane permits cyclists to travel in different directions in the same side of the road. Thorn Lane is parallel to Shafston Avenue adjacent the Shafston House campus.
Members of East Bicycle User Group and Transition Towns have lobbied to have Thorn Street made into a two way bike lane to provide a safe bike route for commuting cyclists.
“During the construction of Clem 7, cyclists were encouraged to use Thorn Street as the cycle route to the CBD” said Cr Abrahams
“Once the major road works were completed, this route was effectively closed to cyclists as the road became a one way road again.”
“There is no safe alternative route” Helen Abrahams said.
The contra flow bike lanes are often called Copenhagen Lanes as they are widely used in Copenhagen to provide safe on-road bike lanes.
“This lane is the first of several contra flow bike lanes urgently needed in The Gabba Ward for safe cycling.” said Helen Abrahams
“There is little road space for cyclists on the busy arterial roads leading into the City. Therefore Council has to be innovative if it is serious about making cycling safe for motorists and cyclists” said Helen Abrahams
“My next goal is to install a contra flow bike lane along Stanley Street, South Brisbane between Annerley Road and Ipswich Road’ Helen Abrahams said.
“This missing link is a real barrier to safe cycling into the CBD from the eastern suburbs.”
