Shared zone solution to parking fines

06 March, 2010

A longstanding agreement for parking in a slip lane in Gladstone Road has been broken by Lord Mayor leaving residents unable to park legally as the majority of them do not have any onsite parking.

The slip lane is so narrow that it is not possible to park legally so residents park with one wheel on the footpath so cars can get through the slip lane.

Council has sent a letter advising that all residents will fined from Monday 8th March.

“The residents area furious and see this as a grab for cash by the Lord Mayor” said Cr Abrahams.

“I support the call of residents for a “shared zone” for the slip lane” said Cr Abrahams.

“The slip lane is a low speed environment and pedestrians needs have been respected in the past so a shared zone makes perfect sense” said Helen Abrahams.

“The residents are furious about the notice warning of fines in the future fines. They work together to make sure their slip lane works: to make sure the garbage truck and everyone’s car can get through the slip lane” said Cr Abrahams.

“The Lord Mayor’s order to Council officers to fine these residents has been made without any consideration to their needs’ said Cr Abrahams

“It is not possible for these residents to park in neighbouring streets as these are all parked out by residents parking legally in their own street.”

“Residents in other streets in Highgate Hill are facing the same problem”
