No more parking fines for slip lane residents

09 March, 2010

Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward congratulates residents who gained an agreement from the Lord Mayor for changes to the slip lane outside their properties, Gladstone Road, Highgate Hill so they will not be issued any more parking fines.

Mr John Samaras, the son of one of the elderly residents fronting the slip lane, won support for the ‘common sense’ approach to the parking blitz in West End.

The slip lane will become a “shared zone” where pedestrians and drivers can use the road space while respecting the needs of everyone using the space.

“I advised and supported the residents in their endeavours to have the blanket no parking enforcements changed” said Councillor Abrahams.

There is not sufficient space for any car to park legally in this slip lane. This has been the situation for more than 30 years.

“There has been an agreement between the residents and Council for 30 years that residents could park outside their properties. It has worked for all this time, without any accident or injury to pedestrians or vehicles” said Councillor Abrahams

“The shared zone legitimises this use” said Cr Abrahams

“I believe this shared zone will be the first shared zone in a residential street in Brisbane’ said Councillor Abrahams

“The two existing shared zones are the Chinese Mall, and Albert Street entrance to the CBD Mall.”
