Call for Bike Hire Station Consultation

Cr Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward calls on the Lord Mayor to consult residents who will have a bike hire station with an illuminated advertising sign in their street.

Eighteen Bike Hire Scheme stations will be located in West End and South Brisbane.

Eleven of the bike hire stations will have an illuminated advertising plinth beside the bike station. Five of these illuminated bike stations will be beside or opposite homes.

“The Lord Mayor should consult these residents as a matter of urgency.”

“Local traders also wish to know the location of the bike stations. The traders will know the best areas for the kerbside parking stations. They must be consulted” said Councillor Abrahams

Some stations are in highly visible locations including entrance to SouthBank, and near the West End Ferry terminal. There are two stations along Vulture Street and five along Montague Road, West End.

“The proposed illuminated bike station at the corner of Thomas and Vulture Street is likely to be contentious” said Cr Abrahams.

“It is a very busy intersection and considered dangerous by local traders as a recent crash between a car and bicycle would indicate” said Cr Abrahams.

The Bike Hire Scheme means seven additional billboards in The Gabba Ward. All but one of these are located in Woolloongabba and East Brisbane – suburbs that are not getting the bike hire project.
