Urgent Action Needed
The Lord Mayor’s promised two way bike lanes for Thorn Lane, Kangaroo Point needs to be actioned urgently on safety grounds.
On Wednesday, three police officers were issuing traffic fines to many of the hundreds of cyclists commuting to the CBD. The cyclists fined were riding illegally the wrong way in Thorn Lane.
During the construction of the Clem 7 tunnel, cyclists were directed to use Thorn Lane. Suddenly, without consultation, the road was made one way and a serious traffic hazard was created.
The only legal option for cyclists is to ride on the busy footpath or on Shafston Avenue where no bike lane has been provided. Both these options are dangerous.
The two way bike lane is the only safe alternative. If Council was serious about integrating the needs of cyclists into major transport projects, the two way bike lane would be open now and cyclist would have a safe, legal bike route to work.
The work on the Thorn Lane bike lane should be given highest priority.
