Chairperson for Public and Active Transport, Cr Jane Prentice has announced that the CityGlider service “is nearly ready to go” and would start next month to coincide with the opening of the Clem7 tunnel.
This means that West End residents do not have a commitment for a roundabout terminus.
“The rush to start this service means residents have been simply told that Council is continuing to explore options regarding the roundabout” said Councillor Abrahams.
“There is no guarantee that Council will construct a roundabout terminus at the West End Ferry Terminal” said Cr Abrahams.
Instead, local streets are to be used as a loop for the terminus when the CityGlider services starts.
Common sense would indicate that residents need a commitment that the roundabout will be built prior to any temporary measures being adopted. Everyone knows of temporary measures that become permanent by de-fault” said Helen Abrahams.
“It is amazing that this 24 hour bus service is to travel along one of the narrowest streets in West End. It is estimated that over 100 000 buses per year will be using Morry Street, Gray Road and Hoogley Street, Hill End. This is not good urban planning. Residents will have noisy buses outside their homes all night” said Cr Abrahams.
The fact that traffic calming device at the Hoogley Street and Gray Road intersection must be modified to make room for these buses makes it clear that these streets should not be used for oversized buses as a loop terminus” said Councillor Abrahams.
I call on the Lord Mayor to give a commitment to a roundabout prior to the start of the CityGlider service” said Councillor Abrahams.
“The CityGlider has the potential to provide a much improved public transport service to the West End Peninsula” said Cr Abrahams .
“Designated bus lanes, particularly in Melbourne and Mollison Streets and Montague Road, are required if the CityGlider is to deliver a reliable, frequent public transport service.”
