LOCAL COUNCILLOR MAKES SURE SUBURBS REMAIN LIVABLE INSPITE OF THE LORD MAYOR’S POPULATION GROWTH

28 January, 2010

Projects to manage the existing growth in The Gabba Ward to keep the inner city suburbs “livable” has topped the list of local Councillor for The Gabba Ward Helen Abrahams’s submission for the 2010 Council budget.

Councillor Abrahams has exclusively revealed her top local funding priorities in her funding submission, which requested almost $58 million for local projects.

“I’ve been listening to local residents about what they’d like to see in our local area, and I believe my budget submission is looking forward to provide infrastructure for predicted growth of new residents and businesses in The Gabba Ward,” Councillor Abrahams said.

“I am asking Lord Mayor Campbell Newman for facilities for future residents in The Gabba Ward. These facilities need to be funded and built now before the thousands of new residents take up residency” said Cr Abrahams

“While I do not support, the population growth proposed by the Lord Mayor, my job is to lobby for the appropriate level of infrastructure” said Cr Abrahams for the new residents.

New parkland so children can kick a footie ball, improved bike lanes, the installation of traffic lights so pedestrians can safely cross the busy arterial roads are priorities for 2010. As well, the community needs meeting spaces and public buildings for artists, musicians and community organisations.

As Councillor for an inner City Ward some of the local projects such as the missing link of the RiverWalk Project from Mowbray Park, East Brisbane to Cairns Street, Kangaroo Point will means from other suburbs will enjoy our wonderful River.

Under the City of Brisbane Act (the legislation which sets out how Council is run), Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is responsible for developing the Council budget and allocating funding. Local Councillors are invited to make funding submissions to the Lord Mayor for local projects.

“I want to ensure our local area remains a great place to live, instead of a concrete-covered city with more traffic problems, unsustainable housing density and ever-increasing rates, charges and fines,” she said

The following key projects – along with many others - have been included in Councillor Abrahams’s budget submission to Cr Newman on behalf of the local community:

"Just as important as these projects are the numerous smaller projects in each suburb that improves the quality of life for the residents of the surrounding streets such as traffic calming of Princess Street precinct, Woolloongabba.

I’m hopeful that once the Lord Mayor delivers his budget in June, we can get started on these important local projects,” Councillor Abrahams said.
