Council’s response to petitioners opposed to the density of the South Brisbane Riverside Neighbourhood Plan states “The current projections are approximately 33,000 residents and 72,000 employees by 2031”.
These projections are an increase on the projections revealed in the secret background document. In July 2009, the projections in the South Brisbane Riverside Renewal Strategy document were 25 000 residents and 55 000 workers coming into the peninsula.
“The community can not have any faith in this planning process when the projected population figures keep changing” said Helen Abrahams.
“The community has given a clear message to the Lord Mayor that they do not want 30 storey towers in the West End peninsula. They are concerned that the existing village atmosphere will be destroyed and replaced by concrete and towering skyscrapers.”
In response to their objections, the Lord Mayor increases the projected population for the area in secret without telling the community. The South Brisbane Riverside South Neighbourhood Plan does not contain any information on the population projections.
“This hides the need for schools, community hall, retirement villages and sport fields from the existing community” said Helen Abrahams.
“The plan is flawed and the Lord Mayor is keeping the community in the dark”
