Helen Abrahams, Councillor for The Gabba Ward is critical of the Lord Mayor’s introduction of the bike hire scheme after a delay of almost a year.
“Today the Lord Mayor announced some details of the scheme. There are 97 fewer bike stations than proposed so no wonder the Lord Mayor has failed to consult with local residents.”
The Bike Hire Scheme was supposed to be up and running by the end of the last year” said Cr Abrahams
.
“Today residents of West End learnt, through the media, of the 9 locations for the bike stations in West End and South Brisbane and the three locations at Kangaroo Point. There has been no community consultation”.
“The original proposal was that the bike stations would take road space the length of 4 to 5 car parks” said Cr Abrahams
“Residents near a proposed locations need to know what a bike station will look like, what will be the level of lighting at a station and are they losing any car parking spaces.”
“Early consultation would have secured a better roll out and better take up of this scheme. Instead we have had delays, secrecy and under-delivery of the project” said Helen Abrahams
“I support the Brisbane Bike Hire Scheme. But it has to be safe. The Lord Mayor needs to designate space on the roads, particularly in the CBD, for the bike hire cyclists.
“The bike advocacy groups call for designated bike lanes as a minimum for safe cycling.”
“The Lord Mayor must, as a matter of urgency, inform Brisbane residents of the details of this scheme if it is going to be a success.”
