Parking Meter Rollout Discriminates

03 February, 2010

Despite holding an official parking permit, resident of West End, Guy Bleney, must now pay to park outside his property in Vulture Street due to Council’s newly installed parking meters.

Were Mr Bleney to park in a metered spot outside his home and not ‘feed the meter’, he risks being fined for parking on his own residential street.

The Gabba Ward Councillor, Helen Abrahams finds this parking arrangement discriminatory.

“There are simply no parking meters in West End with signs to exempt local residents who hold a bonafide resident parking permit” said Cr Abrahams.

“Why are residents in other parts of the city able to occupy metered spots outside their homes at nil cost under the condition of “resident permits exempt”, whilst local residents within The Gabba Ward are not being provided the same exemption?  I am aware that residents in Kelvin Grove can do so, so why not The Gabba?”

“The Lord Mayor rolled out his ‘grab for cash’ parking meters without any consultation or notification of local residents. Now it seems he has put in place different rules for equally eligible rate paying residents who simply live on opposite sides of the river.  This is clearly discriminatory” said Helen Abrahams.

Cr Abrahams calls on the Lord Mayor as a matter of urgency to provide “resident permit exempt” signage in West End at all locations where the parking meters have been installed outside residential properties.
