Dutton Park Councillor Helen Abrahams has encouraged local residents to get involved with Council’s Good Neighbour Clean-Up Scheme.
Volunteers participating in the scheme take large items that do not fit into wheelie bins to Council’s transfer stations for frail or elderly persons, or people with disabilities.
Six residents in Dutton Park Ward benefited from the scheme in 2006, and Councillor Abrahams has urged more local residents to join up.
“I believe it is an excellent program and there are many other frail, elderly persons or persons with a disability who are eligible to join the scheme,” she said.
“I would urge elderly residents with rubbish in their yard or home to register with this excellent program – it is easy to join by contacting my Ward Office on 3403 8605.
“Council is also always looking for volunteers, so if anyone with a car and trailer wishes to help their local community, I would also urge them to contact my Ward Office,” she said.
Once a community member has registered, Ward Office staff provide details of local volunteers who can then be contacted to arrange a time for rubbish to be picked up.
Volunteers include members of six service clubs and also concerned individuals. Benefits to residents also include social contact the program establishes.
The scheme has been in place for five years and during that time only nine residents in Dutton Park Ward have registered.
