UNHAPPY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES DELAY LOCAL PROJECTS

29 October, 2009

Brisbane City Council employees are not happy, and Labor Councillors say it’s affecting local projects.

According to a recent internal survey, the majority of Brisbane City Council’s 9,000 employees don’t think communication within Council is ‘open and honest’, are not happy with Council’s leadership team, and are experiencing unacceptable levels of work-related stress.

They’re also extremely unsatisfied with Council’s communication and technology systems and don’t think areas across Council work well together.

Councillor for The Gabba Ward, Helen Abrahams said unhappy staff meant local projects suffer.

“These results are extremely concerning and it seems that morale at Brisbane City Council is in decline,” Councillor Abrahams said.

“According to these survey results, employees are stressed and communication between Council divisions is poor.

“I believe these issues are having a significant negative effect on the delivery of local projects, such as the footpath improvements in Gladstone Road.

“There was no consultation with the local shop owners regarding the Gladstone Road Project. This is not surprising as there have been several project contact officers for this project. At the moment, the senior engineer is the project contact person in order to redress the lack of effective consultation to date.” she said.

Councillor Abrahams called for Cr Newman to give Council staff more support.

“Council employees provide a wonderful service and level of support to the people of Brisbane.

“They are doing an outstanding job in increasingly difficult circumstances and they deserve the full support of Cr Newman and his LNP Administration.

“Cr Newman must act quickly and address these significant morale and workload issues,” Councillor Abrahams said.
