LORD MAYORS PLAYS POLITICS ON CLIMATE CHANGE & CONGESTION

24 November, 2009

Brisbane City Council Labor Leader Shayne Sutton has slammed Lord Mayor Campbell Newman for ‘playing politics’ over a Labor Councillor’s idea to reduce traffic congestion around a high density development in her Ward.

In her own submission to Council’s Eastern Corridor Renewal Strategy, Councillor for the Gabba Ward Helen Abrahams called for the Buranda Station Precinct development to implement a scheme where the Body Corporate would provide a range of vehicles for hire by their tenants to reduce the need for private vehicle ownership.

Councillor Sutton accused the Lord Mayor of playing petty political games by attacking Cr Abrahams in the Council Chamber today.

“Council shouldn’t be afraid to look at new and innovative ideas for tackling traffic congestion with climate change in mind.” she said.

“But in typical Campbell Newman-style, he chose to play politics and display his utter short-sightedness when it comes to planning a sustainable city.

The particular development precinct referred to by Cr Abrahams is adjacent to the Buranda Busway and train station and is a designated Transport Orientated Development (TOD).

This is about investigating opportunities for sustainable travel options in appropriate sites only.

“To rule out these ideas without appropriate consideration and consultation is short-sighted proves the Lord Mayor is not up to the job of planning a sustainable future for Brisbane,” Councillor Sutton Said.
