Councillor refutes myths

03 November, 2009

Councillor Helen Abrahams refutes the content of the Lord Mayor’s Dear Resident advertisement in last week’s paper.

The only true fact is the Lord Mayor knows that his renewal strategy is not supported by the local residents. He is using every trick in the book of politics to attack any opposition to distract from the realities and impacts of his plan.

The Lord Mayor IS proposing 80,467 residents and workers for West End and South Brisbane as was revealed in his secret background planning documents South Brisbane Riverside Renewal Strategy Final Draft July 2009 These are increases are 440% for the residential population and 360% of the workforce population.

These documents do not show any new parkland where the estimated 2.500 additional kids can kick a ball nor any sites for affordable housing. Only eight buildings in Boundary Street are heritage listed currently. The rest are under threat from the Lord Mayor’s proposal for five to eight storey buildings in this strip shopping centre.

The real facts that the Lord Mayor should be telling residents is the 30 storeys building heights proposed around St Marys Church, the wall of 12 and 15 storey buildings along the River and 15 storeys building heights on the Absoe site, Boundary Street.

The Lord Mayor has invented these six myths. I have not made any of these claims.
