Brisbane City cuts funding

12 November, 2009

Letter to Editor

I agree with yesterday’s editorial “empty promises will not save Moreton Bay” (CM 21/10/09). It will need a well funded regional partnership of environmental groups, businesses, governments and every single resident doing their bit to turn around the worsening water quality in our precious Moreton Bay.

So it is disappointing that Campbell Newman cut $507 000 from Brisbane City Council’s contribution to the SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership last year. Other local governments, such as Ipswich City Council contributed over $500 000 and Gold Coast Council contributed over $1 million.

This meant Brisbane City Council made no contribution to Healthy Waterway’s initiatives such as communication and education programs, scientific work into reducing algal blooms, or the development of a new, exciting website that gives every resident, including Brisbane residents, direct information on the water quality in their nearest waterway.

The Report Card’s poor results show that urgent attention and more action are needed if we want a healthy Moreton Bay. It is not the time to cut funding and I urge the Lord Mayor to restore it and even match the Gold Coast Council’s contribution.

I believe the Brisbane’s funding cut reflects the Lord Mayor’s true priority of building monumental tunnels.
