Residents to loose parking permits

02 November, 2009

Inner city residents stand to loose their resident parking permits while those who do keep their permits may have to pay an annual fee and replacement costs.

The Lord Mayor’s new Regulated Parking Permit (Repealing) Subordinate Local Law will drastically reduce the number of the parking permits allocated.

The new Local Law proposes that residents will need to demonstrate their need for a parking permit rather than being sent two parking permits annually for free. One permit is for the property owner and one for visitors and/or the second car.

Residents with off street parking on their property will no longer receive residents parking permits.

“This decision will be a disaster for inner city residents. It can only be a grab for cash to compensate for the Lord Mayor’s financial mis-management.” said Cr Abrahams.

Increasing pressure on car parking spaces in the inner city suburbs is the alleged reason for the change that slashes the number of permits issued.

“This is not so. The parking schemes in Dutton Park and Woolloongabba work well as, in my experience as a resident, there is, in the main, space for visitors’ cars.

When the Lord Mayor introduced the Dutton Park Residential Parking Scheme, he assured residents that it would be free. Now he is reneging on this promise.

“There are a number of rental houses in my street in Dutton Park. The tenants rely on visitor permits to prevent their getting regular fines. The Lord Mayor’s new scheme will affect them badly”

“I cannot support the Lord Mayor’s new Local Law. I will be voting against it when it comes to Council.” Cr Abrahams said.
